Forum: GratefulDead Subject: A follow-up to Bruce's Birthday

This is just to say thank you to all who responded to my post on Bruuuce's Birthday. And to post the list of recommended Bruce shows for future reference. Bruce will always occupy a place in my heart for the way he tried and succeeded for a while to bring some joy back to Jerry, as well as for the contribution he made to the band.

88-05-23 - Buckeye Lake - Guested on accordion on two 1st Set songs - Sugaree and Memphis - nice but not prominent.
90-09-16 - M.S.G. - I like this show - nice He's Gone jam - again not high in the mix.
90-09-20 - M.S.G. - Very good show - Bruce playing with gusto - Jer responding - Synergy gathering.
90-12-27 - Oakland - Estimated - Comes a Time

that is an amazing piece of work. did you gather up all those links by hand?

the bird song w/santana from las vegas is the most strange and strangely cluttered piece of music i have ever heard. i mean it is just weird - ten people whirling through an elliptical orbit trying to catch up to each other all at once...

but anyways, i think hornsby made a worthy contribution to the dead's music...

Thanks HL. Getting the links was the easy bit - just used the setlist program
The hard part was selecting the 'best' shows. Should I just pick the ones where Bruce shines, or the ones where the band is 'on' or the ones where Jerry is really enjoying himself. There are some shows that pick themselves like 91-09-10.
I'm a novice to 90 - 91 (I'm still exploring 65 - 80) but I was surprised how much good music there is here.
And then again, I have quirky tastes, like the Las Vegas show. That kind of stuff appeals to me. Things like the electric violin in Me & My Uncle and Big River. And Carlos and Bruce having fun with Jer and Phil in Bird Song. I would have loved to have been there. I imagine Jerry with a big smile.
